The BBC Morning Live duo played a key role in Comic Relief’s 40th anniversary fundraiser, which concluded with an impressive total of £34 million, announced during the live BBC telethon on Friday, March 21.
Hosted at Salford’s MediaCity, Red Nose Day featured memorable sketches from BBC favourites such as Strictly Come Dancing, Gladiators, and Beyond Paradise. The event also showcased top presenters including Joel Dommett, Rylan Clark, Alison Hammond, Jonathan Ross, Davina McCall, Tom Allen, Alesha Dixon, and AJ Odudu, all helping to make the milestone fundraiser a huge success.
Helen Skelton has won hearts once again after publicly declaring her “love and respect” for fellow presenter Gethin Jones following their grueling 24-hour “Wheely Big Challenge” for Comic Relief — a fundraiser that alone raised over £1 million for vital causes tackling poverty, injustice, conflict, and climate change.
The BBC Morning Live trio of Helen, Gethin, and Michelle have been close friends for years, and fans have long admired their camaraderie. The Comic Relief telethon also featured a standout comedic moment with The Inbetweeners actors James Buckley and Joe Thomas parodying Oasis’ reunion, adding a lighthearted touch to the star-studded evening. Other celebrity guests supporting Helen and Gethin included Kimberley Walsh, Dr Ranj, Bluey, the boyband Dear Alice, and stars from The Traitors and Gladiators. Video calls from Claudia Winkleman, Faye Tozer, Janette Manrara, Kevin Clifton, Sir Chris Hoy, and Rick Astley helped keep the duo going, with Jamie Laing and Billy Monger offering encouragement in the final hours.
After completing the marathon challenge, Helen shared an emotional reflection:
“Broadcast and roller skated for twenty-four hours. Overwhelmed by your support. In awe of your donations. Thank you for watching and messaging through the night. Thank you for supporting some selfless people who run charities that are trying to give people a bit of an easier ride in difficult times.”
She also paid tribute to her team, friends, and family:
“To the workmates who literally hand-feed you breakfast because they know you won’t get a chance to eat. To teams that treat you like a racing car and pop eye patches on you 26 hours in without hesitation. To friends who distract your kids and hype up your job even though it is an alien world… and my mum, who still taxis me even though I am an adult.”
Helen later turned her attention to Gethin in a deeply personal Instagram post, sharing photos from their roller-skating challenge and the telethon:
“Still not over it. Sorry… Humbled by your generosity and so impressed the @bbcmorninglive team pulled this off… Raised over a million for some charities that lift all of our communities. Celebrated some unbelievably selfless people and their work. Broadcast live for around 26 hours. My dear @gethincjones… You are some man. I don’t publicly say often enough how much love and respect I have for you my friend… you’re a legend and I am beyond grateful to have you by my side on the rink, the sofa and beyond.”
She even joked:
“I can gush — he doesn’t read beyond one paragraph on an Insta post.”
Fans were quick to respond with praise:
@jonesemmas: “Both of you are legends. Such great sports that love a great challenge.”
@sassywyattofficial: “What absolute legends you both are! An incredible amount of money raised!”
@allthingskps_: “You both absolutely nailed it! You are Fab-u-lous.”
@cumbriyam: “You both moved me to tears… Epic. Thank you both.”
@suemcgregor: “Congratulations! What an amazing achievement.”
Adding to the excitement, eagle-eyed viewers noticed a sparkling ring on Helen’s wedding finger during her tribute to Gethin, sparking speculation about a possible romance. Combined with her heartfelt words calling him “some man,” fans have been buzzing with wedding rumours and romantic theories — though neither Helen nor Gethin has confirmed anything beyond friendship.
Could love truly be back in Helen’s life after heartbreak? Is a TV wedding on the horizon? Only time will tell… but one thing is certain: fans are absolutely here for it.
