Actor Sam West has shared a heartfelt account of the final chapter of his mother Prunella Scales’ remarkable life, revealing that their last meaningful conversation took place two years before she passed away.
The beloved Fawlty Towers actress, who died peacefully at the age of 93, spent her later years courageously facing dementia. The condition gradually affected her mental health and ability to communicate, but it never diminished her warmth or her sense of humour.

“How Old Am I?” — Her Final Perfectly Timed Joke
On the Rosebud podcast with Gyles Brandreth, Sam West recounted their last meaningful conversation, which happened on her 90th birthday.
“She asked, ‘How old am I?’ I told her, ‘You’re 91, Mum.’ And she replied, ‘91? F***.’ It was beautifully timed, perfectly enunciated. That was Mum witty, sharp, and completely herself, even as the illness took hold,” he said.
Sam added softly that it was “probably the last thing that made any sense.”

Sam West has opened up about his mother Prunella Scales’ final years living with dementia, revealing that their last real conversation took place two years ago.
A Royal Moment Few Knew About
Despite her declining memory, Prunella still had moments of clarity. Last year, she attended a literary event in Rye with Queen Camilla, and to everyone’s surprise, she seemed to recognise the Queen. “They kissed, laughed, and chatted,” recalled Gyles Brandreth. “If you hadn’t known about her illness, you’d never have guessed.”
Love That Outlived Memory
Prunella’s husband of 61 years, Timothy West, passed away in November at 90. Sam shared that his father was deeply affected by the loss, while Prunella, heartbreakingly, never knew he had died. “She isn’t aware that he’s gone, which sounds sad, but it’s a mercy,” Sam explained. “She isn’t mourning a 61-year marriage.”
Their bond endured in spirit, with their shared love of canal boating serving as a touching metaphor for their journey through life and illness. Sam recalled his mother saying, “I don’t always know where I’m going, but I always enjoy getting there.” Even in confusion, she found beauty.
A Quiet Strength Behind the Scenes
After her 2013 diagnosis, Prunella continued living at home in London with the support of carers and family. She even attended her grandson’s church choir performance just months ago. “She was never angry, never bitter,” Sam said. “Quite content, actually. We were lucky to have treatment that slowed things down. The hardest part was watching Dad lose his best friend her laughter, her spark.”

Despite meeting Queen Camilla last year, Sam West revealed that his mother’s mental health and communication skills declined significantly in her final years. With a bittersweet smile, he added, “Honestly, I think they went in the wrong order.”
The Legacy of a Comic Legend
To the public, she was Sybil Fawlty, the sharp-witted yet endearing wife on Fawlty Towers. To her family, she was a woman of extraordinary talent, humour, and vulnerability.
“Mum didn’t always love being herself,” Sam admitted. “Acting gave her freedom when dementia took that away, it broke her heart.”
Her Fawlty Towers co-star John Cleese paid tribute, calling her “a wonderful comic actress and a very sweet lady.” He added, “Scene after scene, she was absolutely perfect. Two of my best departed comedy friends Pru and Nicky. She was already a star when I entered show business.”
A Peaceful Goodbye
Her family confirmed that Prunella Scales “passed away peacefully at home,” surrounded by loved ones.

Gyles Brandreth shared that at an event he hosted last year, attended by Queen Camilla, most guests were unaware of the extent of Prunella Scales’ dementia.
“Though dementia cut short her 70-year career far too soon, her final days were peaceful, comfortable, and surrounded by love,” he said.
Prunella leaves behind two sons, a stepdaughter, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
She may have forgotten the world, but the world will never forget her.
Rest in peace, Prunella Scales forever Britain’s comedy queen.
