Taylor Swift Pokes Fun at Herself in New Album Teaser: ‘It’s Giving No-Girl, Not Showgirl’

The “Life of a Showgirl” singer also humorously highlights her slouching posture and being covered in cat hair in new promo clips for her 12th studio album.

No one trolls Taylor Swift quite like Taylor Swift herself.

On Monday, she shared two promo clips on social media teasing her upcoming 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl (out Friday), in which she pokes fun at herself.

The videos specifically promote the recently announced Target-exclusive vinyl edition, The Crowd is Your King. In the clips, Swift plays both the director of the album shoot and the titular showgirl. In one scene, she wields a glittery pink megaphone, shouting instructions to Showgirl Taylor.

“All right, we’re still rolling let’s try this again,” Swift says in her director persona, keeping things professional. “We’re elegant, luxurious, in front of the most beautiful pink vinyl ever. What’s happening with the posture? It’s giving no-girl, not showgirl. What are we doing?”

The scene then shifts to Showgirl Taylor, dressed in a pink corset and matching heels, attempting to toss pink glitter into the air but she steps backward awkwardly. Director Taylor scolds her: “Elegance, charm -not that.”

Offscreen, she adds with a whisper, “She’s got cat hair all over her. Is there a school we could very quickly send her to?”

Possibly referencing one of the album’s 12 tracks, “Honey,” Director Taylor tells her showgirl alter ego, “Come on, honey, this is show business.”

A voiceover from Swift then promotes the album: “The Life of a Showgirl. Exclusive edition, only at Target. And it comes with a pretty big poster, too.”

On Monday, Swift also shared a separate set of outtakes on her Instagram Stories. In these clips, she appears even more exasperated with her showgirl persona, saying, “We are still rolling; in fact, I was just waiting for you to get it together. There’s not enough coffee in the world.”

Eventually, Director Taylor groans at her showgirl alter ego’s performance and calls the session to an end: “And that’s gonna have to do. Thank you so much, thanks for coming in. Bye.”

These playful videos are the latest in a series of promotions for Swift’s highly anticipated album. The 12-track record, The Life of a Showgirl, drops on October 3 and will be celebrated with a three-day-only movie event, The Official Release Party of a Showgirl.

The event will feature the premiere of the music video for lead single “The Fate of Ophelia”, behind-the-scenes footage from the shoot, song insights, and lyric videos. A Spotify pop-up experience in New York City begins Tuesday.

Swift has also announced three upcoming late-night appearances: The Graham Norton Show on October 3, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on October 6, and Late Night With Seth Meyers on October 8.
