Schmigadoon Is Coming to Broadway, Scheduled to Open in 2026

It’s time for some corn puddin’!

Schmigadoon is taking another big step toward theatrical success.

A stage adaptation of the Apple TV+ cult favorite is coming to Broadway. The musical, which follows the storyline of the show’s first season, will have a limited run at New York’s Nederlander Theatre in 2026.

Previews are scheduled to begin on April 4, with the official opening night set for April 20, and the production is slated to continue through September 6.

“Schmigadoon is a love letter to the Golden Age of movie musicals,” said producer Lorne Michaels. “It’s a little bit nostalgic and a lot of fun. We’re very excited to bring it to Broadway.”

The stage adaptation of Schmigadoon premiered at the Kennedy Center this past January, featuring a score that expands on the music from the show’s six-episode first season.

The story follows New York doctors Josh and Melissa originally portrayed by Keegan-Michael Key and Cecily Strong—who embark on a couples’ backpacking trip to reignite their relationship.

When they lose their way in the woods, they discover Schmigadoon, a magical town where the Golden Age of musicals comes to life.

Now, Josh and Melissa find themselves trapped in a town where the singing never stops, and the only way out is by discovering true love which may not necessarily be with each other.

Schmigadoon creator Cinco Paul previously told Entertainment Weekly that he had Broadway in mind if the Kennedy Center run went well. “All I’ll say is I want Schmigadoon to conquer the world, and I won’t rest until every single person on the planet has seen our show, so make of that what you will,” he said.

The stage score includes new songs, such as “The Picnic Basket Auction” and a number inspired by the style of Adler and Ross, the composers of Damn Yankees.

Additional details, including casting, have yet to be revealed. Alongside Lorne Michaels, the production team includes Micah Frank and Caroline Maroney representing Broadway Video, as well as Christine Schwarzman and Megan O’Keefe from No Guarantees Productions.

Regarding the unproduced third season, the Broadway adaptation might help rekindle the project’s prospects. “Most of the movement is inside my heart, but I’m not giving up,” creator Cinco Paul said. “I’m really proud of the work that all of us in the writers’ room did, and I think the fans would really love it. Take heart in the fact that I have not given up, and there are other fans who would also love to see that happen. You just never know; life is long.”
