Law & Order: SVU Says Goodbye to Capt. Cragen With Heartfelt Funeral: ‘The Greatest Boss I Ever Had’

Law & Order: SVU opened its 27th season with a bittersweet storyline, as the team gathered to say goodbye to one of their own during an emotional funeral.

The premiere, which aired Thursday, brought together beloved detectives at a New York City bar to honor the memory of NYPD Capt. Donald Cragen (played by Dann Florek).

Although Florek himself is alive and even stopped by the set in August during filming, the episode served as a final sendoff for Olivia Benson’s (Mariska Hargitay) longtime mentor.

At the service, Benson delivered a heartfelt eulogy:
“He was the best boss I ever had. Everything I know about being a captain, I learned from him.”

The episode also reunited fans with several familiar faces from SVU’s past, including Dr. Huang (BD Wong), Rollins (Kelli Giddish), and Fin (Ice-T), making the farewell even more poignant.

Christopher Meloni also returned for a short cameo. His character, Detective Elliot Stabler, couldn’t bring himself to step inside the memorial to grieve for his former captain, but he did share a warm exchange with Detective Benson. “We had a pretty good run there for a while,” he told her.

Dann Florek hasn’t been a full-time cast member since 2014, though he has occasionally returned as Capt. Cragen over the years. The Season 27 opener may have been his final time stepping into the role.

The funeral storyline also hinted at a shift for Detective Benson, who reflected on her own career while surrounded by longtime friends and colleagues during what she called their “all-our-friends-are-dying era.”

At one point, she admitted she’s “closer to the end than the beginning,” a line that suggests major changes could be ahead for SVU’s future.

In addition to his SVU appearances, Florek also showed up in Christopher Meloni’s spinoff, Law & Order: Organized Crime, for four episodes between 2022 and 2024.

New episodes of Law & Order: SVU continue to air Thursdays on NBC at 9/8c.
