Rory McIlroy’s wife Erica left the Ryder Cup in tears after facing fan abuse and being struck by a drink

Rory McIlroy’s wife was left in tears and walked off the course following abusive behavior from fans at the Ryder Cup.

During his four-ball round with Shane Lowry on Saturday afternoon, European star Rory faced a wave of hostility from spectators.

Rory McIlroy faced chants of “f*** you Rory” and insults targeting his family and personal life during the round.

His wife, Erica Stoll, watched in distress as the abuse escalated, even being struck by a drink thrown from the stands at Bethpage Black, New York.

By the end of the day, Rory could be seen consoling Erica on the 18th green. According to reports, she was in tears, with “tears streaming down her face,” as the couple walked off the course arm-in-arm.

McIlroy admitted he felt “drained” after the round, which included an incident where he told a fan to “shut the f*** up” in response to the harassment.

Rory delivered a strong performance alongside Shane Lowry, helping add another point to Team Europe’s total, with the side leading the U.S. 11½ to 4½ heading into the final day of singles matches.

The 36-year-old and his wife Erica had announced their divorce last year but later revealed they had reconciled.

Some fans, however, took their behavior too far, targeting Rory’s personal life. One reportedly shouted, “How’s your divorce going?”

Another added: “Your ex is looking for you.”

A third shouted: “Rory, how’s your love life.”

McIlroy and Erica married in 2017 and have a daughter, Poppy.

The PGA of America – who run the Ryder Cup – were forced into emergency security measures on Saturday.

They had to ramp up protection and call in the State Police following the vile abuse towards McIlroy and Co.

A guard of officers could be seen up the fairways, along with dogs.

A number of fans were kicked out of the tournament following the abuse.
