Gogglebox stars Jenny and Lee’s real-life relationship, jobs and partners

Gogglebox favourites Jenny and Lee have been part of the Channel 4 show since 2014 and have provided plenty of memorable moments – but what do we know about their lives off-screen?

Gogglebox favourites Jenny and Lee have been a cornerstone of the programme since they first appeared in 2014. The TV duo from Hull are celebrated for their sharp wit, animated expressions, and cheeky banter with each other that makes them stand out from the other cast members.

Since joining the Channel 4 show, audiences have witnessed countless memorable scenes, including Jenny’s sleuthing during the final series of Line of Duty to discovering who ‘H’ was, Lee mistakenly consuming Jenny’s face cream believing it was a delicious dip, and a washing disaster that transformed Lee’s white garments into a vivid orange hue thanks to a coloured towel.

Their relationship started at a neighbourhood pub where Jenny served as landlady in 1994.

Speaking to Ireland’s Big Issue, Jenny remembered: “Lee was a customer at my pub, The Crown Inn in Paull. He became a regular in 1994 and used to come in pretty much every night with his partner and we were friends from the off. We’ve been best friends ever since.”

Lee added: “I wish I’ve never gone in the pub it cost me a fortune. When I first met her she had a perm and I can remember thinking, ‘She needs a haircut’. We were firm friends immediately.

“I don’t think we’ve ever had an argument. We’re too placid to argue. She makes me laugh too much for me to ever fall out with her.”

Jenny and Lee were already avid television viewing companions long before Gogglebox producers discovered them.

Channel 4 talent scouts contacted Jenny at Beverley Races Ladies’ Day, enquiring if she’d be interested in featuring on the show with her husband. Instead, she recruited Lee, although he needed substantial convincing.

Lee told the Hull Daily Mail: “I wasn’t [at Beverley Races] but she asked me if I wanted to sit and do a test filming with her.”

He continued: “I’d never seen Gogglebox, it had only just started, so I walked into filming swearing my head off because she’d got me out of bed on my day off.”

Jenny reckons Gogglebox’s charm stems from featuring ordinary people doing exactly what everyone throughout Britain does – sitting down to watch television whilst having a good chat about it.

She explained: “It’s just ordinary people reacting as anyone would. I think people watch and see themselves, ‘Oh, I do that, or, I said that'”.

Lee added: “It’s all completely natural. You forget the cameras are there and you just act normally.”

Whether Jenny and Lee presently maintain employment remains uncertain. Jenny formerly operated a pub whilst Lee has stayed silent about his career history.Ray has never appeared on the programme once. He declined to take part in Gogglebox, but Lee was encouraged to step in as her sofa partner instead.

Meanwhile, Lee has been in a relationship with his partner Steve Mail for an equally impressive 31 years.

They shared on Instagram in June: “Wow Mr Mail Happy Anniversary 31 years together with love, tears, heartache but then again who’s perfect me and you that’s all counts.”

Jenny, however, normally resides with her husband Ray at a different location.

During the initial lockdown in spring 2020, Gogglebox favourites Jenny and Lee briefly shared accommodation to keep filming for the show whilst Lee’s partner Steve was in Cyprus.
