Coronation Street’s Claire Sweeney declares love for 90s popstar after ‘proud’ Manchester moment

The actress, currently best known for playing Cassie Plummer in the ITV soap, joined them for a big night in the city

Coronation Street star Claire Sweeney has declared her love for her 90s popstar pal after joining them for a big moment in Manchester.

The actress is currently best known for playing Cassie Plummer in the ITV soap, decades after she shot to fame in the Channel 4 soap, Brookside, as Lindsey Corkhill.

It was back in January that Claire first revealed she and Ian ‘H’ Watkins go back decades as she paid tribute to their long-standing friendship.

Taking to Instagram, Claire shared pictures of the pair taken as they came together to say a heartbreaking goodbye to their friend, The Vivienne, following the drag performer’s death, aged 32.

In one photo, Claire could be seen planting a kiss on Steps star H’s cheek before another showed them smiling for the camera.

She then shared one of the first pictures of them together and said:

“Friend’s for 30 years, thick and thin, fat and slim, boyfriends, breakups and babies. Second pic taken 25 years ago! I always love you my friend @ianhwatkins treasure your friends.”

It was then on Thursday night (September 4) that the pair were reunited as Claire hit the red carpet at the Manchester Opera House as Steps made a special appearance at the press night for their musical in the city.

And thos in attendence o opening night in Manchester were in for an unexpected finale as all five members of the band, H, Faye Tozer, Lee Latchford-Evans, Claire Richard and Lisa Scott-Lee all took to the stage.

Following the show, Claire took to Instagram with a number of snaps from the evening. One shared to her Instagram Story showed her and H posing for a selfie on the red carpet, alongside which she said: “Love you and I’m just so proud of you. Just loved @thestepsmusical.”

Claire was also seen with her Corrie co-star Sue Devaney, who plays Weatherfield’s Debbie Webster, as she also headed out for a night of pop classics alongside a number of their other castmates and stars from Waterloo Road.
