They say you can never fully know what happens behind closed doors or truly understand someone else’s relationship unless you’re part of it.
So, I was shocked and heartbroken when Stephanie Davis announced on her Instagram stories this Sunday that she and her boyfriend Joe McKalroy had split, just four months after welcoming their first child, Samuel.
Last August, they seemed so deeply in love, it was unexpected to hear about the split. When I interviewed Stephanie and Joe then, their connection was genuinely touching.

After the interview, I felt truly happy for Stephanie, sure that she had found The One and was finally experiencing the happiness and stability she deserved.
Despite having some sickness during her pregnancy after a holiday abroad, Stephanie looked radiant and clearly excited about growing her family with Joe, who was equally happy.
During the interview, Joe—whom Stephanie had been dating since 2022—was very attentive as they shared their joy about expecting a baby together, a little brother for Stephanie’s seven-year-old son, Caben, from her difficult past relationship with ex Jeremy McConnell.

The couple looked so happy as they shared with me that their relationship felt like ‘fate,’ having met during a difficult time for both while in therapy. They talked about wanting to get married, with no sign their bond wouldn’t last forever.
Stephanie said, “I was still working on myself and going through a tough time because of past trauma, and we met at a therapy session. Joe tragically lost his brother to suicide during lockdown; he was just 20. We met at a low point, but I brought light back into his life, and he brought light back into mine.”

“Together, we both grew and built a beautiful life. Usually, couples face challenges later, but we met when we had very little to give, honestly. We were at a really low point, met during our hardest times, and helped each other through it — making each other happy. I truly believe it was fate.”
That day, the atmosphere was full of love and peace. I remember Joe would often come over just to give Steph a quick kiss on the cheek or hold her hand while we talked. It was obvious how deeply in love they were.
Joe’s dedication to Steph’s son, Caben, was also clear. While Steph got her makeup done, Joe was chatting with Caben and keeping him entertained. They shared a special, sweet bond, and he seemed like a truly caring stepdad.
Steph said warmly, “They’re like twins — their connection is so special. It’s beautiful to see. Joe will be just as devoted to the baby. He’s selfless and always shows up.”

Stephanie had already faced a lot in life, so it was wonderful to see her finally find what looked like her happy ending. A fairytale come true? Absolutely.
I don’t know what really happened—only those involved truly know, and I wouldn’t want to speculate. But as someone who’s admired Stephanie’s strength from afar, I’m heartbroken for her.
Moving forward as a single mum, especially with such a young child, won’t be easy. Still, I know Stephanie is an amazing mother who loves her boys deeply and is surrounded by supportive friends and family. I’m certain she’ll not only get through this difficult time but eventually thrive alongside her beautiful children.
It’s incredibly unfair that someone who had finally opened her heart again after so much hurt now faces such a tough challenge during what should have been the happiest chapter—enjoying the baby bubble as a blended family of four.
