Inside Sally Lindsay’s life with famous husband, career struggles and Peter Kay connection

Sally Lindsay has been a familiar face on TV for many years, but early in her career, she was told she’d never succeed in the industry — and it was all because of one particular reason.

Popular actress and comedian Sally Lindsay has been gracing our screens for years in popular shows like ITV’s Coronation Street, Loose Women and Still Open All Hours.

Interestingly, it was Sally’s knack for comedy that catapulted her to fame. After starting as a stand-up comedian post-theatre school, her northern wit and charm caught the eye of Peter Kay, who cast her in Phoenix Nights.

Following her success in the comedy series, Sally landed the role of Michelle, Twiggy’s girlfriend, in the popular show The Royal Family in 2000. But it was in 2001 that she truly made her mark on television, joining the legendary cast of Coronation Street as Shelley Unwin.

Sally Lindsay appeared in an impressive 750 episodes of Coronation Street and won the Best Actress award at the Inside Soap Awards in 2005 for her portrayal of Shelley Unwin. Since leaving the show, her career has taken a new direction, with Sally now starring in the popular Channel 5 detective series The Madame Blanc Mysteries.

She’s also hosted her own program, Posh Weekends, where she explored some of the UK’s most luxurious homes. This weekend, Sally returns to Channel 5 to present Sally Lindsay’s 70s Quiz Night, according to Plymouth Live.

The show promises a nostalgic journey through the 1970s, with Sally leading the way alongside team captains John Thomson and Shaparak Khorsandi, plus a host of celebrity guests joining the fun.

Career struggles

Despite her TV success, Sally Lindsay originally dreamed of becoming a radio journalist. Unfortunately, her northern accent was considered a major obstacle — she was told it was “too northern” to succeed in radio.

In an interview with The Express, Sally opened up about those early challenges: “I got rejected by all the local radio stations because they didn’t like northern accents, even though I was in Hull!”

She went on to explain, “I’ve always had a passion for radio journalism, but I often heard things like, ‘We don’t need a female Terry Christian, thanks very much.’ It sounds crazy now, but back then, it was a different era. In the Nineties, there were very few people on the radio with a northern accent.”

Pop success

Sally Lindsay’s talents go beyond acting and comedy—she also found early fame as a chart-topping child star. Growing up in Stockport, Greater Manchester, she first appeared on BBC One at just seven years old.

Marriage to a music legend

Off-screen, Sally is married to drummer Steve White, known for playing with Paul Weller and the Style Council. The couple tied the knot in 2013, celebrating with a star-studded guest list including Gok Wan, Alan Carr, Suranne Jones, and Denise Welch.

Together, they have twin boys, Louie and Victor. Sally often credits her family for changing her perspective, especially after once fearing motherhood might not be possible in the entertainment world.

In an interview with Prima, Sally shared, “Steve and I have been together for 20 years and married for 10. Spending time apart due to work actually helps keep the spark alive in our marriage—I truly believe that. It means we always have plenty to catch up on.”

Sally explained, “Steve heads up the music on my shows. I throw out the most random, obscure ideas, but because he’s my husband, he always understands exactly what I mean.”

She went on to praise him, saying, “He has an incredible musical knowledge. He’s amazing—kind, funny, handsome, and yes, a rock star, which definitely helps! Plus, he’s the best dad.”
