Angelina Jolie and her father, Jon Voight, have been open about the challenges they’ve faced in their relationship over the years. Jolie, the daughter of Voight and the late actress Marcheline Bertrand, was born six months before her parents separated. She and her brother, James Haven, were mostly raised by their mother.
Reflecting on her mother’s influence, Jolie said, “My mom married at 21, and by the time she was 25 she was divorced with two little kids. She couldn’t be the artist she wanted to be, but she raised her children with art and creativity.” She also described their contrasting personalities, saying, “While I loved her softness, she loved my strength.”

Jolie, who has six children with her ex-husband Brad Pitt, has had periods of estrangement from her father. Despite their ups and downs, Voight remains a proud grandfather. He expressed his joy in seeing his grandchildren grow and shared how time with them makes him appreciate life’s fleeting moments.
Their relationship saw significant shifts over the years, with a reconnection in 2001 when Voight played her father in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. However, by the following year, Jolie claimed they were once again not speaking much. Voight acknowledged their “ins and outs,” noting that they were both passionate people but shared love despite their disagreements.
By 2017, after Jolie’s divorce from Pitt, their relationship seemed to improve. Voight was supportive of her during this difficult time, helping with her children and offering his creative presence. He also praised her as a mother, saying, “She’s a really good, good mommy.”
Despite their differences, including conflicting political views that Voight later hinted at, their bond seemed to strengthen, with Voight celebrating Jolie’s work, including her involvement in The Outsiders musical, and expressing pride in both her and his granddaughter Vivienne.
Though they’ve faced challenges, their relationship has evolved, with mutual respect and care remaining at the core of their connection.
